APWeb 2006 Panel Session
Title:
Web and Enterprise Computing
Panel Abstract: Traditionally, information technology (IT) in enterprises
has focused on the "backend" of data processing, e.g., database management
systems and enterprise
resource planning (ERP) systems. With e-commerce, web has become an
important direct link between consumers and businesses (B2C, as well as
B2B). Typical 3-tier e-commerce applications integrate web software (web
servers and application servers) and backend processing (database servers,
supply chain management and ERP systems). The panel will discuss the potential
tension and synergy between the web front end systems, IT backend systems, and
Grid systems, as they evolve in different directions: (1) web front ends towards
richer semantics and functionality; (2) backend systems need higher
availability, reliability, and security; (3) Grid systems as platform and
infrastructure for web and enterprise computing.
