Semester One, 2004

Assignment 2 Suggested Topics

Choose 3 of these topics, ranking them as 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice:

  • the future of chip multiprocessors
  • trends in clustered CPU designs (also called clustered microarchitectures)
  • the future of simultaneous multithreading
  • limits to aggressive instruction level parallelism
  • significance of the memory wall
  • the value of DRAM-processor integration
  • trends in energy-efficient CPU design
  • strategies for energy-efficient memory design
  • significance of leakage current in low-energy design
  • significance of wiring delay on scaling up performance
  • the case for whole system simulation
  • explicit intruction-level parallelism: IA64 in context
  • predicated instructions: IA64 in context
  • ARM instruction set evaluated as a RISC design
  • survey of branch prediction
  • trends in multimedia processors
  • limits to aggressive pipelines

If you have your own topic, first check at one or both of the ACM and IEEE Computer Society digital library sites that there is literature in the area, and send your proposed topic with a list of 4 to 5 papers to the course coordinator for approval.
