CSSE3000, CSSE7011 - Digital System Design I

SHORT INFO

  • Delivered: Semester 1, 2011
  • Contact hours: 2h lectures + 1h tutorial, 2h lab experiments per week.
  • CSSE3000/CSSE7011 introduces students to the more advanced concepts, methods and techniques of digital design and is a follow up of CSSE2000 - Introduction to Digital Systems. It is focused on in depth understanding of design principles, good command of VHDL language and tools, and systematic design and testing methodology. In other words:  we apply informed design decisions, we do not fix problems by trial end error, we know why things are working (or not), we test, test, test ..., we document, and finally we present our results in a professional way.
    This course covers:
    • Principles of analysis & synthesis of digital circuits.
    • Structured design of combinatorial & sequential digital circuits.
    • Digital system building blocks & their interfaces.
    • Digital system simulation & synthesis with VHDL.
    • Electrical & timing issues in digital system design.
    • Basics of VLSI CMOS technology
  • Required Text
    • Charles Roth, Digital Systems Design using VHDL, Thomson, ISBN 0-534-38462-5

  • Complementary  Texts
    • Frank Vahid, Digital Design, 1st edition, Wiley, ISBN 0-470-044437-3
    • Frank Vahid, Roman Lysecky, VHDL for Digital Design, 1st edition, Wiley, ISBN 0-470-05263-1
    • ANY textbook covering modern design methodology - but remember: it must be read not just gathering dust on your bookshelf.
