Newsgroup post clarifying updates to assignment 1: --- Hello! There have been a few queries about the rephrasing of assignment 1, so I will try to clarify those that I am aware of: Q: What does "only 20% from web pages" mean? A: A minimum of 80% of your citations should come from sources that are PERMANENTLY ARCHIVED and have an ETERNAL REFERENCE. Positive Examples: * Anything on the net that has a DOI and resolves using a DOI resolver http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_object_identifier * Newspaper articles have a date, page and publisher. You can find the article after years by going to the newspapers archive. * Book citations have an ISBN number and a page. * Articles have a journal, publisher and series number. * Reports have an organisation, date of publication and often an ISSN number. Negative Examples: * All web site content, that may change its URL in the future (in short, anything that leads to you not finding or finding something different) This qualification applies to most websites I know. You can still use 20% of your sources in this group, but in a real scientific or industry context this would need to be 0% if you are actually using things for an argument. Special Case Wikipedia: * In WIKIPEDIA, all changes ARE backed up and CAN be tracked. However, Wikipedia is not a PRIMARY source. Wikipedia articles are a summary written ABOUT something. So using wikipedia for the actual case information is not acceptable. However the RESSOURCES and REFERENCES cited on a wikipedia page may be ok. Q: Do I have to change the structure of my talk due to the change of areas to be covered? A: Most likely not. The areas to be covered in the assignment are about the CONTENT that has to be included, they are NOT slide title entries. The change is only meant to insure that in the group, people are experts on the various aspects of the case. This means they will probably investigate in different directions. And each person signs of that there aspect is adequately represented in the talk. If you have other questions on the assignment, please post them [to the newsgroup]. Thanks! JG
