Announcement: Personal Software Engineering Discussion Group From: Daniel Bradley Janet Wiles and I are pleased to announce a new discussion group series for programmers developing complex systems simulations. Each session will start with a short talk (~25 min.) by a developer describing their current or past work, and a personal critique of the usefulness of the software engineering practices they employed eg. documentation (requirements/specification), design, testing etc. After each talk will be an open discussion, which we envision will be more spontaneous and in-depth than usual seminar question times. A goal of the discussion group is to facilitate sharing of software engineering expertise between developers and provide exposure to new methodologies and techniques. Our aim is to increase the level of software engineering expertise among complex systems modelers. RSVP If you are interested in being involved please send a quick email to me at d.bradley@imb.uq.edu.au, so that we can keep track of numbers. Additional details may be found on the discussion group's web page: http://www.itee.uq.edu.au/~daniel/pse-dg/index.html The first talk will be this coming Tuesday 17th January. Place: Room 421, GP South (Building 78) Time: Tuesday 17th January, 12:00 Title: "Of Application Frameworks, GRN Simulations and Software Engineering" Presenter: Daniel Bradley Abstract: This talk will describe the use and effectiveness of various software engineeringtechniques used while developing a cross-platform C++ application framework, and the gene regulatory network (GRN) simulations developed using it. The first section will describe the framework and its capabilities, the second will discuss problems encountered developing and using cross-platform libraries, finally, the third section will discuss the software engineering practices used as well as reflect on those that should have been used.
