CONFERENCE LOCATION

The DSD'2001 Symposium will be organised in parallel to EUROMICRO'2001 conference in Warsaw, the capital of Poland. The venue will be the Faculty of Electronics and Information Technology in the Warsaw University of Technology, which is favourably located in the centre of the city. In 2001 The University will celebrate its 150th anniversary and the Faculty its 50th anniversary.

Warsaw has 1.6 million inhabitants. It is a busy and charming city located on both sides of the Vistula River, with numerous parks, gardens, palaces, museums and churches. Warsaw is the centre of public, and cultural life in Poland. It is also one of the largest academic centres in Europe. There are plenty of galleries, theatres, cinemas and music scenes. Every year several prestigious international cultural festivals and competitions take place here. The seven-century history of Warsaw is full of hardship; the city was almost completely destroyed during World War II and afterwards raised from ruin. From Warsaw you can easily reach other tourist attractions in Poland: one day trips to Krakow, Gdansk, Malbork, or half day trip to Zelazowa Wola (Chopin birth place) are possible.

The most interesting places to visit in Warsaw are Old Town, The Great Theatre, National Museum, The Royal Road, Lazienki Park and Wilanów Palace. The Old Town is the oldest district of Warsaw (13th - 14th century) with preserved mediaeval architecture and city walls. Completely destroyed during the Second World War, it was rebuilt after the war with the former urban structure faithfully conserved. The Old Town is on the UNESCO list of World Cultural Heritage. In the Old Town there are many charming cafes and restaurants frequented by Varsovians and tourists. The Royal Road connects the Royal Castle with the two other royal residences in Lazienki Park and Wilanów. On this road you will find many palaces, churches, and elegant shops. In Lazienki Park there are beautiful old trees and romantic lakes, the summer residence of the last Polish king, the Palace on the Water, the Old Orangery and the amphitheatre. In summer there are Chopin concerts held in the park at the monument of this great Polish composer. Wilanów is a splendid example of baroque architecture with a royal palace, the residence of the great Polish king Jan III Sobieski, and a beautiful park.

Warsaw may be reached directly by air from any European capital and from other major cities. The International Airport is located 8 km from the City Centre. Many international trains arrive to the Warsaw Central Railway Station located in the City Centre.
