Assessment Overview
The course will be assessed
by several methods as outlined below. Your final grade (on a 1 to 7 scale) will be
determined by combining the marks from the various assessment components as
described below. For each
assessment item, reference is made to the specific learning objectives which the assessment item will address. The product assessment
item is common to whole team.
Product - 65% (Team) : Your completed working product.
Written Reports - 20% (individual) : The grades from your reports.
Written Reports -
Pass/Fail (Team)
Meeting Assessment - 15% (individual):
The lecturer and/or tutor will grade your performance as both chair and
participant at the scheduled team meetings, in addition you are required to have
a set of meeting minutes marked.
Peer Assessment - Weights your product mark (individual): Your
peers will assign you a mark based on your attendance and
performance at informal team meetings, and your contribution towards the team
effort.
Mark Sheets for all Assessment Items can be
found here.
Polices on Assessment such as extensions and
late hand-in of assignments are described below.
Product
Assessment will initially be carried out by your tutor, with a subsequent checking of all products and grades by the lecturer. The assessment scheme is biased towards completeness. To get a good grade the product must be sufficiently implemented for the customer to be able to use it in its operational environment, even if it might not quite meet the specifications. This means that circuits built on prototyping board will not do very well.
The system must be
delivered in a testable form by the due date. There will be a penalty of 1 mark
deducted from the demonstration assessment for each hour (or part thereof) that
the project is handed in late. There will be bonus of 1 mark for every full
working day early that the project is handed in, up to a maximum of 5 marks.
The system must come in under budget ($100). There will be a penalty of 1 mark
deducted from the demonstration assessment for each $1 (or part thereof) over
budget. There will be a bonus of 1 mark added to the demonstration assessment
for every full $10 under budget. Bonuses for early hand in and for under budget
are ONLY awarded if the product satisfies the criteria of Full Functionality as
described in the individual product specification currently in force.
The mark will be based
mainly on the performance of the product during evaluation. It is very
important that your product is functioning correctly during the evaluation
session, and that clear instructions are provided as to how the product is
operated. Consideration of past performance or re-evaluation of the product at
a later date will not be entered into.
Peer Assessment
Meeting Assessment
Your performance in four
team meetings will be assessed by the lecturer or tutor. You will be assessed
once as the chair person of the meeting (5%), once as a meeting scribe (5%) and for
two occasions as a
participant of the meeting (2 x 2.5%). For teams with three members, one member
will repeat as chair with their best chair mark to count (5%), one member will
repeat the role as a scribe and their best scribe mark will count (5%), and the lesser
marks as (2.5%). For teams with five members, there will be a fifth team meeting
scheduled with each member receiving their own chair mark, and the best three
of their participant marks.

Assessment Policies
Submission
Submission of the
assignments will be via the submission boxes on level 1 of the GP South
building by the designated submission time detailed in the
Teaching Plan. Your assignment submission
must be accompanied by a signed coversheet declaring that the submission is
your original work.
Late Submission
For every day or part
thereof which any report is submitted late, 20% of the marks allocated to that
report will be deducted from the total mark. Late submissions must be made to
the ITEE office on level 2 of the GP South building. Extensions will be granted
only for medical or compassionate reasons. Application for an extension must be
made before the due date to the course coordinator.
Return of Assignments
Marked reports will be returned directly to student during the first practical session(s) after the items have been marked. They will then be available in Donald's office for collection (78-458).
Late Arrival or Non-attendance at Examinations
The policy and procedure
for late arrival or non-attendance at centrally controlled examinations is set
out in the University's Examinations policy (HUPP
3.30.5), sections 8 and 10.2.
The way in which late
arrival at a School-controlled examination is dealt with will be at the
discretion of the course coordinator, who may be guided by the policy for
centrally controlled exams.
In the case that a student
requests a special exam for a School-controlled exam, the request will be
considered and, if allowed, the timing shall be determined by the course
coordinator, in consultation with the School's Chief Examiner where necessary,
and in accordance with HUPP 3.30.5. Unless otherwise indicated in the
Course Profile, applications must be made in writing to the Head of School no
later than one week after the exam. Late applications will not be
accepted.
Academic Merit, Plagiarism, Proper Referencing,
Collusion and Other Misconduct
The School and the wider
academic community in general takes academic integrity
and respect for other persons and property very seriously. In particular, the
following behaviour is unacceptable:
·
Submission

copied from an unacknowledged source.
·
Submission
of work without academic merit, i.e. work that adds little or nothing to
material available from reference sources such as textbooks, websites, etc.,
even where this is appropriately acknowledged.
·
Engaging
in collusive behaviour, i.e. inappropriate working
together with other students where individual work is required, or working with
people outside your team where team work is required.
·
Copying
work done by other students.
·
Failing
to adhere to the School's regulations concerning behaviour
in laboratories, in particular occupational health and safety regulations.
Penalties for engaging in
unacceptable behaviour can range from cash fines or
loss of grades in a subject, through to expulsion from the University.
You are required to read and understand the School Statement on Misconduct,
available on the ITEE website at: http://www.itee.uq.edu.au/about_ITEE/policies/student-misconduct.html.
This Statement includes advice and links to other sites on how to properly cite
references and other sources in your submissions and on acceptable levels of
collaboration.
If you have any questions concerning this statement, please contact your
lecturer in the first instance.
Assessment Feedback
Timely feedback on all
progressive assessment in this course will be available in accordance with
University policy (HUPP
3.30.6 Student Access to Feedback on Assessment).
It is a student’s
responsibility to incorporate feedback into their learning; making use of the
assessment criteria that they are given; being aware of the rules, policies and
other documents related to assessment; and providing teachers with feedback on
their assessment practices.
