ANDS Projects Overview

ANDS Logo The ITEE e-Research Group at the University of Queensland is contributing to the Australian Research Data Commons through a number of Australian National Data Service (ANDS) funded projects. ANDS is building the Australian Research Data Commons to support the discovery of, and access to, research data held in Australian universities, publicly funded research agencies and government organisations for the use of research.

Health-e-Reef Project 2010

The Health-e-Reef Project developed data capture and sharing services for coral-reef related data generated by researchers at the University of Queensland Centre for Marine Science, together with their collaborators in community/volunteer groups (CoralWatch, ReefCheck) and government organisations (DERM). The project defined common metadata standards and associated services for describing, publishing and discovering these highly heterogeneous datasets. There was a particular focus on automatically capturing the metadata necessary to support discovery, decision, and reuse.

The project developed the GBR-CAT (Great Barrier Reef - Climate Analysis Tools) system to host and share the coral reef related data. The software code that implements GBR-CAT is available under an open source licence via a Google Code repository.
Scoping Study for W4 Semantic Tagging Service 2010 This scoping study (PDF) investigated the availability of suitable technologies for providing a Who/What/Where/When (W4) semantic tagging service. The project scoped a service to enable tagging of texts, images, maps, video and audio content - using tags drawn from controlled vocabularies, that specify people names, concepts, place names, dates/times and events. The report describes the most effective approaches for a service to support both automated and manual tagging of various content types.

Spatially-Integrated Social Science Data Repository (SISS) 2010 - 2011 The Spatially-Integrated Social Science Data Repository project is building a data access portal that allows analysis and visualisation of spatially-integrated social science data. The data includes public data (such as Australian Bureau of Statistics and Australian Electoral Commission data), derived datasets (such as Functional Economic Regions) and newly generated data (such as simulations from the National Centre for Social and Economic Modelling). The Aquatic Species Tracking project (OzTrack) 2010 - 2011 The Aquatic Species Tracking project collected data captured by researchers from the Ecology, Conservation and Organismal Biology (ECO)-Lab at the University of Queensland who are using arrays of underwater, acoustic receivers to track aquatic animals (crocodiles, turtles, rays and sharks) within river systems over large temporal (3-10 years) and spatial scales (100's km). The data is being collected to improve our understanding of the ecology and habitats of these species and to provide information to aid in their conservation and management. Microscopy Image Repository (MIRAGE) project 2011 - 2012 The Microscopy Image Repository (MIRAGE) project is establishing a common UQ repository for microscopy and micro-analysis images and data being generated by users of instruments hosted by the Centre for Microscopy and Microanalysis (CMM) Centre for Microscopy and Microanalysis (CMM)
Diffraction Image Repository project (DIMER) 2011 - 2012 The DIMER project will capture and share X-data and images generated from the Rigaku X-ray diffractometers in the UQ Remote Operation Crystallization and X-Ray Diffraction Facility. The 3D Anthropological and Archeological Collections Project 2011 - 2012 The 3D Anthropological and Archeological Collections Project is developing software to the streamline the capture and generation of 3D digital models of anthropological, archeological and museum artefacts from a Konica Minolta 3D laser scanner and enable their upload (and metadata ingest) into an institutional repository.
