Remote medical training

Vannotea Heart Surgery Forum

Watch a demo video

Hypothetical Usage Scenario:

Surgical video libraries such as the Heart Surgery Forum offer educational videos of new surgical procedures that can be used to teach remote doctors.

A heart surgery expert may provide live training sessions to remote medical students from universities that are part of a Shibboleth Federation. Prerecorded videos from the surgical video library are uploaded and secured to an online repository. Distributed students are part of a virtual class (defined in an XACML policy) that is granted access to the material through their home university's shibboleth SSO account. Every participant in the training session uses Vannotea to access the material and to discuss it via the embedded Jabber Client. In addition, they can communicate with each other over a video conferencing channel such asVic/Rat.

The expert initiates the training session by loading and playing the video in Vannotea. Each participant accesses the video with their personal credentials for which access control is applied. Vannotea is also used to record all control events of the video, the Chat messages and the audio from the videoconferencing.

CancerGrid

This project is a component of a Department of Education Science and Technology (DEST) Innovation Access Programme research grant (CG050091) - "Integrating Australia into Global eScience". Vannotea will be deployed at UK eScience Centres in Cambridge, Oxford and Southampton. In particular, it will be trialed within the CancerGrid project where it will support collaboration between distributed clinicians coordinating clinical trials for cancer diagnosis and treatment. In particular it will provide distributed clinical teams with shared group access to data associated with the clinical trials.
