 Additional INFS7100 Assignment

INFS7100 Ontology and the Semantic Web

Assignment 2: Semester 1 2006 Value 5%

Given week 1, due 4:00 pm Monday 29 May 2006, in assignment box Level 1 Building 78.

Note that this assignment can be completed at any time during the course, and can be handed in when completed.

This assignment applies only to students enrolled in INFS7100, not to students enrolled in INFS3101.

Purpose: bring additional material into the course

This assignment will be done in groups of up to 3, with a single report prepared per group. All members of a group will receive the same mark unless a strong case is made to the contrary.

Each group will prepare a 200 word report containing commentary of material relevant to the course NOT in textbook. Examples of optional material include:

  • Optional readings
  • Articles in the press
  • Trends drawn from several articles
  • Perspectives from other languages, cultures or countries
  • Your own experience.
  • Any other material relevant to the course -readings, CD-ROMs, web sites.

The commentary will show how the material contributes to the course, perhaps as

  • An example of a non-trivial concept
  • A counterexample or wider context showing deficiencies in some concepts
  • Possible future development of examples used in the course
  • Historical background to examples used in the course
  • Proposed new concept
  • Something novel or interesting (including how it is relevant)

The 200 word report will:

·              Briefly summarize the item.

·              Say what aspect of the course the item is relevant to

·              Plausibly argue how it is relevant

The mark for this assignment will be combined with the mark for Assignment 1 on a per-student basis according to the formula

Overall assignment mark = (Mark for assignment 1 + Mark for assignment 2) x (40/45)

The combined assignment will count 40% of the marks for the course.
