“Team Training Evaluation in Healthcare: Increasing the Effectiveness of Neonatal Resuscitation Teams”

Team training evaluation is seldom done systematically and is often performed with subjective measures. My research goal is to increase the validity of team training evaluation by increasing the objectivity of the measures and by applying a systematic evaluation typology. I used Brunswik’s theories to guide development of a more objective method of evaluating team performance.

The domain of practice of my research is Neonatal Resuscitation in which teams of clinicians, doctors, nurses and midwives perform multiple tasks under severe time constraints. Currently there is no formal curriculum for team training for these practitioners.

My research included the design and delivery of training interventions to staff members from the Mater Mothers’ Hospital, Brisbane, Australia. Training was partly delivered in a simulator centre – Queensland Health Skills Development Centre – and partly in the hospital. Training in the hospital was in the form of weekly debriefing sessions. During the course of the research, neonatal resuscitation episodes had been video recorded and were later presented in the debriefings. Evaluation methods were developed and applied and Kirkpatrick’s typology was used for the evaluation process.
