Apologies if you already know this, but if you are using the ROMFS as 
the root filesystem (as per uclinux-dist default), it will always be 
read-only, no matter what block driver you use (I'd recommend the MTD).

It might make more sense to boot from a ROMFS-based filesystem, then 
mount the compact flash card as /usr, with whatever filesystem works 
best for you.

I'm spoilt now by doing ethernet kernel updatse for so long, I haven't 
done one of those painful XMD downloads in months...

It would be great to net-enable the bootloader, using bootp or similar...
