Kernel update shouldn't affect userland compile. one thing i can think
of is that you have pre-built uclibc laying around.
are you doing make distclean after cvs up?

insmod patch is not yet in uclinux-dist. you manually need to patch up
your dist with the insmod patch at John's site.
# you shouldn't use -C option when you update your code base if you
# have modified any files. it'll revert to cvs version.
