Problem solved.
I edited the makefile in ../uClinux-dist/user/mtd-utils:

BUILD_TARGETS = $(pathsubst %,build/%,$(TARGETS))
to
BUILD_TARGETS =

as you suggested (http://mailman.uclinux.org/pipermail/uclinux-dev/2004-
July/027316.html), and the error vanished.
So now I have my image.bin and image.elf files in the /images dir.
