Absolutely - it's just the Cygwin thing that troubles me.  It's an 
impressive piece of software, but it's just not linux.  Filesystem 
induced differences in handling of file permissions, links, and other 
subtleties make life more difficult than it needs to be.

If I had vmware, I'd want to try the mirror-within-mirrors thing - linux 
under windows under linux under windows under...

Speaking of stunts - I saw a screenshot of booting i386 linux under the 
Bochs x86 emulator, which itself was running under ARM Linux on... an 
iPaq! :)
