You need to enable the kernel configuration option for kernel command
line support:
make menuconfig -> customize kernel -> processor type and features ->
kernel cmdline support [*]
Then if you are using the standard mbvanilla bootloader, one of the
options is to specify the kernel command line, enter it there, then boot.
If you want this permanently set there's a bit of work to be done,
making the kernel parameter persistent. try the above first, make sure
the basics are there.
