"Usually", the Spartan is the cheaper version of a Virtex chips.
It really depends, what you are trying to do with them, for most cases
the spartans are OK.

But serious, we can't help you too much, until we know what you're
trying to do ...

Compatible in what sense ? Some chips (some spartan2, 2e, 3) are too
small, to have anything usfull done, however, you could get the uClinux
on it.

Get a small Evaluation Board (like the Xilinx $100 spartan3, or better,
you can ask again here), buy/install the EDK, install the elf-tools, the
uClinux sources, and start playing ;-)
