Glad to hear things are looking up at your end.

In terms of raising the bar, you should definitely be able to use the 
graphical front end to mb-gdb, same as with the standard version.  I 
don't think this was enabled in the build mb-gdb-user build that you have.

I've spoken to Xilinx about this and we are working on it - in the first 
instance something like the Insight graphical environment over mb-gdb is 
likely - I'll keep you informed.
