Thanks John,
It is a physical restriction on the target board. 
First I will try to put the microblaze/µCLinux in an evaluation board 
(Virtex II Pro 2Vp4/7 FG 456 Rev. 3 from Memec)to see how it works and to check the memory needed.
Are there any possible challenges on the way to handle?

It's probably possible, but it will be tight.  You'll also need to do 
some fairly simple, but non-standard memory saving tricks.

Is the memory restriction physical (e.g. you already have the board, and 
that's how much memory it has) or is that a guide/requirement from your 
academic supervisor?

If it's a physical/board limitation, then you might have a little bit of 
trouble squeezing it in - or at least if you do fit it, there won't be 
much memory left to do something useful.  However, still could be a good 
experiment.

If it's just a guide, then I suggest you speak to your supervisor, 
explain that you want to do uClinux on the MicroBlaze, and that you may 
require more than a meg but that you'll be working hard to squeeze it 
down :)
