This happens automatically these days - if the MDM UART is configured,
and has its interrupt line connected, then the uartlite driver detects
that and enumerates it as a regular TTY. No auto-config.in hacking
required.
Take a look at the top of arch/microblaze/kernel/xmbserial.c for the
gory details.

Yes - this will be the recommended approach for 8.1 onwards. I'm still
looking at a simple way of doing it under 7.1
