However, none of the web pages have 8.1i info. I'm also putting this
under vmware under Centos 3.5. I got the drivers to compile and install.

Question: Will the 6.3 uClinuxAuto package work for 8.1i? If so, what
changes do I need to be aware of?

I wouldn't recommend it - it would take longer probably to rev it up,
than to create a new one from scratch based on Jason's tutorial.

Furthermore converting an old project may not work well.
I moved my project from 7.1 to 8.1 but the new GUI didn't work at all with converted project, so I created a new project from scratch (following the Jason tutorial and cut an paste with old MHS file) and it works fine. Especially if you use Linux I suggest to move to 8.1, the IDE is a LOT better than 7.1.
