RE: [microblaze-uclinux] Microblaze uClinux 2.6.11

Mark,

Since you’ve hinted at a development/developing strategy would you please elaborate on Xilinx’s intent with regard to uClinux for the microblaze and ppc405 along with 2.6 support? Or be able to provide some type of time frame on when you’d be able to announce any plans. Thanks.

From an official perspective……

My job at Xilinx is to provide our customers with the 3rd party SW and IP support that they need for their product integration of Xilinx’s technology. To this end I have to consider not just the OS porting itself but tools and support as well looking towards the user’s experience with the whole product.

We (Xilinx) are engaged with PetaLogix who we regard as a Tier 1 partner for our Embedded Ecosystem. They are a real company with real product, however young they may be, and Xilinx will continue to support them in their growth going forward.

Because the popularity of uCLinux and the amount of associated work (and open source Linux as well) continues to grow, Xilinx has also engaged with a mature Linux company for uCLinux and open source Linux porting, support and tools. Because of my position at Xilinx, I can not say who this is until the official press release. This is not to say that we no longer have a relationship with PetaLogix – quite the contrary. PetaLogix will be involved in these efforts. Five months ago John and I tried to build a 3 way partnership with a company that would provide support and a commercial tool chain to complement his OS product. This relationship would have provided uCLinux developers a world class product followed by world class support and world class tools. Unfortunately, this deal fell through and it has taken until now to close with another partner.

So, all this being said, it is not John’s issue that there is not yet 2.6.11 support. If you need to question Xilinx’s uCLinux 2.6.11 support then question me because it was my decision not to fund PetaLogix directly for the uCLinux 2.6.11 port.

Best Regards,

Mark Jensen
