Re: [microblaze-uclinux] Microblaze uClinux 2.6.11

Hi Chang,

this means even more good news, and that Xilinx really listens. I know that multi-processing has been another issue that is of wide interest. And the short version of the USERx field being present in PVR base implementation, yes I see know its primary use is 'cpuid' for multiprocessing setup. I sure there are people around interested in better multiprocessor support. I was more thinking in auto-config of the kernel in runtime based on the parameters in full version of the PVR as this is the thing that caused me trouble when I was ramping up the uClinux on MicroBlaze the very first time, namly I had precompiled kernel with caches enabled, and tried that with MB system without caches. A smart kernel could(should) query the PVR, and if present enable-disable caches based on PVR values. So the path is free to have the MB-uClinux support to come to next level as of auto-config possibilities.

Thanks for the updates and confirmations that good news are on the way,
Antti Lukats

Thanks for your answer, Antti.

MB v5 will be backward compatible with MB v4 from software perspective, so we see no major issue in running current uClinux 2.4.x in MB v5.  PVR is a new register added in MB v5, and we expect that it will be useful in multi-core MB designs. MB v5 with Virtex-5 FPGA will be officially supported in EDK 8.2 SP2. We will make sure that uClinux 2.4 and 2.6 will work on both MB v4 and MB v5.

Thanks,

Chang

Hi Bret,

Virtex-5 is supported by MicroBlaze ver 5. ASFAIK it is fully upward compatible to MicroBlaze 4.0 so there should be no problems using uClinux (MB 3/4 version) with MicroBlaze 5 (on Virtex-5 or 4 or other supported FPGA's).

I have not yet tested uClinux on MicroBlaze ver 5.0 system yet, but I am sure if there are any issues they will be fixed. Some Test programs compiled for MicroBlaze 5 have been run both in Virtex-4 as also in XSIM simulator(the only simulator currently able to run MB-uClinux). Xilinx Virtual Platform simulator is currently not able to run uClinux succesfully (the boot process terminates with random errors at different stages before console prompt), this should be fixed soon also. MB 5 has some new features (PVR register) that may have some use in the uClinux as it is now possible to query the processor configuration options and user ID codes. This could have some additional use in uClinux but is not so necessary for basic operations. eg the kernel could check if caches are there and enable them only if the core has them.

I will check the MB uClinux-2-4 with MB5 reference design as soon as EDK 8.2 SP1 comes out.

Chang,

Thanks. I?m sure I?m not alone in hoping Xilinx provides timely and noteworthy updates for features and function on the embedded software side of the business. I do have one question, what are your plans for Virtex-5 in terms of uClinux? Any information is appreciated.

Bret,

Thanks for your interest.  Currently we are targeting uClinux 2.6.x for Microblaze by Dec, 06 time frame. I can provide more update later as the project progresses.

As for PPC405, both MontaVista and Wind River are very close to releasing their 2.6.x Linux distributions for Xilinx platforms (ML403 and ML300).

Mark,

Since you?ve hinted at a development/developing strategy would you please elaborate on Xilinx?s intent with regard to uClinux for the microblaze and ppc405 along with 2.6 support? Or be able to provide some type of time frame on when you?d be able to announce any plans. Thanks.

From an official perspective??

My job at Xilinx is to provide our customers with the 3rd party SW and IP support that they need for their product integration of Xilinx?s technology. To this end I have to consider not just the OS porting itself but tools and support as well looking towards the user?s experience with the whole product.

We (Xilinx) are engaged with PetaLogix who we regard as a Tier 1 partner for our Embedded Ecosystem. They are a real company with real product, however young they may be, and Xilinx will continue to support them in their growth going forward.

Because the popularity of uCLinux and the amount of associated work (and open source Linux as well) continues to grow, Xilinx has also engaged with a mature Linux company for uCLinux and open source Linux porting, support and tools. Because of my position at Xilinx, I can not say who this is until the official press release. This is not to say that we no longer have a relationship with PetaLogix ? quite the contrary. PetaLogix will be involved in these efforts. Five months ago John and I tried to build a 3 way partnership with a company that would provide support and a commercial tool chain to complement his OS product. This relationship would have provided uCLinux developers a world class product followed by world class support and world class tools. Unfortunately, this deal fell through and it has taken until now to close with another partner.

So, all this being said, it is not John?s issue that there is not yet 2.6.11 support. If you need to question Xilinx?s uCLinux 2.6.11 support then question me because it was my decision not to fund PetaLogix directly for the uCLinux 2.6.11 port.

Best Regards,

Mark Jensen
