The hostname, and /etc/passwd file etc all get setup in the vendors Makefile
(vendors/XXX/YYY/Makefile, probably Xilinx/uclinux-auto).  Have you changed
anything in there in attempting to get the shell history stuff to work?

Check the uClinux-dist/romfs/etc directory, make sure that passwd is there, and
looks ok, and so on.
