I'm also using the CentOS VMWare image from XAPP730.  I had some
problems sharing files with VMware Player, so I switched to VMWare
Workstation (thankfully my school had it available). You are pushing
[Enter] for the password, right?  I've been able to log on an download
updates, but it was been very slow (~10-12 hours to update) and often
times out.   From other posting it appear that it should take less
than 20 minutes.

If might be easier to get Windows software that supports .gz file. The
include WinAce, Stuffit, PowerArchiver, WinRAR, and WinZip.
