In the HW sense, DMA is a superset of the FIFO functionality.  So, even 
if the HW is still buiklt with full DMA support, you can configure the 
driver (via the auto-copnfig.in edit I mentioned) to only use FIFO mode. 
It's jsut a way to quickly revert to FIFO mode without rebuilding the HW.
