You might try a "make prune" from the petalinux-dist directory. It's
inherited from uClinux-dist, and to be honest I haven't actually tried
it. But, I think it does much of what you suggest, thought in the user
and vendor trees, not in the kernel.
The real "fat" is actually in /user anyway.
