[microblaze-uclinux] 16550 uart console stays blank

Hello,
I want to evaluate the 16550 uart core. I changed the .config of the
kernel as described here:
http://developer.petalogix.com/wiki/UserGuide/AdvancedTopics/Using16550Uart

When booting the console stays blank but telnet works after a while. The
relevant /proc/kmesg output is:
<6>Serial: 8250/16550 driver $Revision: 1.90 $ 4 ports, IRQ sharing
disabled

The difference is that 
serial8250.0: ttyS0 at MMIO 0x83e01003 (irq = 3) is a 16550A

is missing. The autoconf.h file has been processed correctly by the petalogix scripts as all the relevant #defines are there.

Has anybody a hint what I am missing?
