I take the example from Xilinx and their University Program in this
regard - the use of PetaLinux in legitimate teaching and research
projects is something we will continue to encourage and support.

First, this applies for the -v0.40 noMMU kernel only. If you look in
the kernel config, under "Processor type and features", you will see a
menu option "Allow placing code/data in BRAM".
If you enable this option, several sub options will become available.
If selected, the kernel will relocate the chosen subsystem code into
BRAM upon boot, resulting in measurable performance improvements.
This feature is not available in the MMU kernel yet, but it's on the list.
