Since MicroBlaze was merged into mainline (as of 2.6.29) we've adopted
the Flat Device Tree (FDT) model for representing devices in the
system. This has many benefits over the old platform_device
initialiser stuff that is in the 2.6.20. Google will tell you more
details about device trees than you can possible absorb!
FDT is related to OF (open firmware) in a number of ways, but the
distinction is not important here.
Grant's patch series is unifying the implementation of the in-kernel
support for FDTs. Currently it is duplicated across 3 archs
(MicroBlaze, PowerPC and Sparc).
It's all basically functionality-neutral - just a big cleanup exercise
that will improve maintainability and portability into the future.
Cheers,
John
