File Storage

The best option for storage is your personal hard drive that we recommend you purchase. You have the choice of storing your data on the Temp drive or (for IT and Multimedia students), your H drive. There is a lot of space on the H drive (for Multimedia and IT students only); but unfortunately, it takes considerable time to download files to this drive. The amount of time depends on the traffic, but it may take twice the time of playback of your footage to download it.

Engineering, Communication, Film Studies or Journalism students may not have access to the amount of storage space that IT students have. You are free to use the Temp Drive which has around 200 gb. Does this mean you can only work on a single machine? If you go in through Administrator/admin, you can access the drives through any machine.

Obviously leaving material on the temp drives is possible, and they do not get wiped until the end of semester, however anyone can alter them. You should store your capture files and project file from Final Cut Pro on hard drives, which we have recommended you purchase.

Consumables: Essential Supplies

It is recommended you purchase a 320gb or 500 gb hard drive.( Office Works have a 720gig hard drive for $129). Apart from what you submit for assessment, you should burn a DVD master and copy of your video. You can also upload a re-encoded version onto Revver, YouTube or Vimeo. You'll be pleased to know that there is no problem with outgoing data as far as your download allowance is concerned.

Make sure you have a supply of essential consumables with you when you are shooting your production. 9 volt batteries are used for the mikes in the handycam kits. AAA batteries are used in the headphones for the Sony HVR V1P kits and the JVC kits. AA batteries are used for the radio mikes. You don't want to find that these have died when you are shooting and not have any with you, so you should make sure you have some spares. Gaffer tape is supplied with the lighting kits, but you should have some with you to tape down mike leads if you are not using lights. Of course if you are shooting with the HVR V1Ps, you will be using tapes. The ones we use are Sony DVM 60 PRO mini DV tapes

Camera Manuals

Below are the links for the camera manuals for both of the camera types we have

Handycam HDR SR11/12

HVR VIP (listed as HVR VIU, but it is virtually identical)

I really recommend these video tuts on Youtube for the new camera JVC/GY-HM100E. There are 16 short videos, but the

most relevant are 2-13. They are concise and give a complete rundown. However one mistake he makes is in the colour temperature of outdoor light and indoor

light when he is talking about white balance. These are 5,600K and 3,200 K respectively, instead of the other way around as he puts it.
