We will meet in Week 4 on Wednesday from 10-12. (As this was Ekka Wednesday, we changed it to Friday 2-4pm) and thereafter weeks 7, 9 and 10 for between 1 and 2 hours.
You may find Screen Media Arts: An Introduction to Concepts and Practices useful for extra reading. It focusses in particular on digital media. There are several chapters suggested for the readings below. You will find it in the high use section of the Physical Sciences and Engineering library under
Cohen, Hart, Salazar, Juan Francisco and Barkat, Iqbal. Screen Media Arts: An Introduction to Concepts and Practices
The first reading is Chapter 3, "Contemporary Genres" in . Screen Media Arts. Please come having read it and ready to discuss the reading as it relates to your scripts. We will also discuss your script ideas and how you plan to realise them.
The second meeting is a camera workshop for masters' students on this coming Friday 2nd September from 2pm-3:50pm in building 50-S201. It will be taken by Aaron Wakem who has recently worked on
several films as a lighting cameraman. It will give you some hands on experience as well as the theory we cover and expand your repertoire of skills, given that what can be covered in pracs is limited.
Our third meeting is Week 7 Wednesday 10-12. Let's meet in my room 349. The second reading is The Documentary Screen, also from Screen Media Arts.
Another useful reading, if you would like to delve further into this topic is "What Types of Documentary are There?" It's from
Nichols, Bill. Introduction to Documentary. Bloomington, Indiana; Indiana University Press, 2001. Chapter 6. pp. 99-138.
This is where the author makes the original classification of documentary types that is the basis for the discussion in the chapter above. The "Documentary Screen" chapter then takes us into the present, dealing with more up-to-date documentaries.
Also come with some ideas about an area of your digital video you are interested in discussing in the reflective essay. I suggest some questions to think about below. Begin to plan how you might research this area. You can check the assessment item for the reflective essay under the sidebar item Assessments on the course web page. There are some minor adjustments to be made, but this will give you the general idea of what you are working towards.
Our fourth meeting is on Friday of Week 7 9th September from 2-3:50pm, this time in 78-343. This is a lighting workshop to be taken by Aaron Wakem. This hand- on experience will give you more expertise in how you light your videos.
Our fifth meeting will be in week 9 when you will make your presentations of your videos for assessment. The outline for the assessment item will be posted later.
Our final meeting will be week 12. At this Wednesday 10-12pm meeting you will all give a short informal presentation of your research on the topic you have chosen. It should incorporate a reflection on some aspect of your digital video. The time before this should be spent on researching an area of interest in preparation for your reflective essay.
Some questions you might address are:
What area are you interested in? What is the history of this kind of filmmaking? How have other filmmakers worked in this area? Are there problems? How have others solved them? How have you dealt with similar issues?
