Continuous models

The modelling formalisms described in Section 4 above all share the assumption that state variables can be represented in a discrete fashion. In reality, while it is true that, at a given point in time, a gene is either being transcribed or not being transcribed, levels of activation, rates of transcription and product concentrations can all vary in a continuous fashion. This section describes a number of approaches to modelling GRNs in which a continuous representation is used for state variables.
