Biography
From 1983 to 1986, Professor Brian Lovell worked in Saudi Arabia and Egypt with Schlumberger SA. He then returned to the University of Queensland to pursue his PhD. While studying for his PhD, he was offered a lecturing position in 1989. In 2000, Professor Lovell was visiting professor at the MIT Media Lab, Michigan State University, and the University of Alberta. In 2004 he was appointed Director of Engineering in the School of ITEE at the University of Queensland.

Biography
Abbas Bigdeli received his bachelor of Electronics Engineering in 1995 from Department of Electrical Engineering, Amir Kabir University of Technology, Tehran, Iran.  He started his postgraduate study at James Cook University, Australia in 1996.  He concluded his PhD research in 2000 when he moved to Auckland, New Zealand to join the faculty of Engineering at the University of Auckland. During his tenure at Auckland University, Abbas was an active member of High Performance Embedded Systems and signal processing research groups at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. In February 2006 he moved back to Australia to join National ICT Australia, Queensland Lab as a researcher in the Safeguarding Australia Program- SAFE Sensors Project.
    Abbas has been actively involved in many industrial projects in collaboration with various companies in New Zealand, Australia and USA. He has more than 6 years experience in consultancy, scientific research and technology leadership in the areas of digital signal and image processing, computer architecture, and information security. He has designed a number of innovative high performance embedded systems including an AES grade Security System for Wireless LAN and the first portable real-time face recognition system. Abbas is a member of IEEE. He has published over 45 papers in journals, book chapters and refereed international conferences. He has invented 3 patents in the areas of information security and computer vision.
    He has been acting as a technical reviewer for several journals and conferences. These include Journal of Microprocessors and Microsystems, European Signal Processing Association Journals, Australian Journal of research and practice in IT, as well as Conferences such as FPL, IEEE VLSI and EUSIPCO.


Dr Conrad Sanderson

Biography
Dr Conrad Sanderson received the Bachelor of Engineering degree with 1st Class Honours in 1996 and the Ph.D. degree in 2003 from Griffith University, Queensland, Australia.
   He has previously worked on robust speech recognition at the Advanced Telecommunication Research Laboratories (Japan), audio-visual biometrics and non-frontal face recognition at the IDIAP Research Institute (Switzerland), ship classification in infra-red images at the Centre for Sensor Signal and Information Processing (Australia), as well as natural language processing and bioinformatics at NICTA.
   He has served as a reviewer for a number of international conferences and scientific periodicals (such as the Proceedings of the IEEE journal). His current research interests include applied areas of machine learning, pattern recognition and computer vision, with applications such as intelligent surveillance.



Dr Shaokang Chen

Biography
Dr Shaokang Chen received the BE degree from South China University of Technology in 1999 and PhD from The University of Queensland in 2005. He then worked as a researcher in the University of Queensland for medical image processing projects. He is currently a research fellow with NICTA for security and surveillance projects.

Biography
Dr. Erik Berglund received the equivalent of a Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering from Ostfold University College in 2000 and a Ph.D from the University of Queensland in 2006. He is currently a senior research fellow at UQ.

Biography
Ting Shan is a Researcher with the NSST project, of SAFE Sensors work package in the Smart Applications For Emergencies (SAFE) program at NICTA's Queensland Research Laboratory. He developed two face recognition approaches, particularly for face images under different pose angles, and a real-time face recognition system during his Ph.D.

Biography
Hans Burkhardt obtained his Dipl.-Ing. degree in electrical engineering in 1969, Dr.-Ing. degree in 1974, and the Venia Legendi in 1979 from the University of Karlsruhe, Germany. From 1969 he was Research Assistant and in 1975 he became Lecturer at the University of Karlsruhe. During 1980-81 he had a scientific fellowship at the IBM Research Laboratory, San Jose, CA. In 1981 he became Professor for Control and Signal Theory at the University of Karlsruhe. During 1985-1996 he was full Professor at the Technical University of Hamburg and director of an Institute in the Computer Science Department and additionally scientific advisor between 1990 and 1996 for the Microelectronic Application Center (MAZ) in Hamburg. Since 1997 he is full Professor at the Computer Science Department of the University of Freiburg; director of an Institute for Pattern Recognition and Image Processing and currently Deputy Dean of the Faculty for Applied Sciences. Since 2000 he is president of the German Association for Pattern Recognition (DAGM). He is a member of the "Academy of Sciences and Humanities, Heidelberg", of  “acatech” (Council of Technical Sciences of the German Academies of Sciences) and a Fellow of the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR). 2003/2004 he was on a sabbatical leave for half a year as a Visiting Researcher at the National ICT (NICTA) at the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra, Australia.

He has published over 200 papers and given more than 250 lectures. He is a consultant for several national and international institutions e.g. the German Science Foundation (DFG), the European Commission and different international organizations and journals. In 1998 he was chair of the European Conference on Computer Vision (ECCV).

Experience: Invariants in pattern recognition, optimal image restoration methods, motion estimation algorithms, parallel algorithms in image processing and pattern recognition, image analysis and vision guided control of combustion processes.

Biography
Dr. Manas Kamal Bhuyan received B.E (Hons) in Electrical Engineering from Dibrugarh University, Assam. He received M.E. (Hons) degree in Instrumentation Engineering from Jadavpur University, Calcutta and Ph.D degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Indian institute of Technology Guwahati, India. He is now working as a visiting fellow/researcher in the school of ITEE of University of Queensland, Australia and National ICT, Brisbane, Australia under BOYSCAST fellowship offered by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. His broad research interests include Image/Video Processing, Computer Vision and Human Computer Interactions (HCI).
