Seminar Information

What would have happened if Charles Darwin met Vilfredo Pareto? The Pareto view to evolution, robotics and complexity.

Speaker: Dr. Hussein Abbass, School of Computer Science, University of New South Wales at the Australian Defe

When: 2003-05-30 13:00:00

Venue: 78-224

Host: Prof. Peter Lindsay

Abstract:

Optimization theory is not just about mathematics, it has roots in
economics, social sciences and philosophy. This seminar will attempt
to position Optimization theory, more precisely vector optimization,
in artificial life. The seminar will be three-fold. The first is an
easy introduction to vector optimization. The second covers some of
our techniques in this area. The third will attempt to answer some
fundamental questions in artificial life and robotics about
complexity, diversity, and neuroevolution.

Biography:

Hussein Abbass is a Senior Lecturer and the Director of the
Artificial Life and Adaptive Robotics Lab at the School of Computer
Science, University of New South Wales at the Australian Defence
Force Academy Campus in Canberra. Dr. Abbass has more than 65
refereed publications and a wide range of expertise in Optimization,
Evolutionary Computation, Data Mining, and Artificial
Life. http://www.cs.adfa.edu.au/~abbass/
