Using Participatory Design to Support Multimodal Interactions in Information Environments

Speaker: Timothy Cederman-Haysom, ITEE

When: 2003-05-21 15:00:00

Venue: Building 1 Room 223, Ipswich Campus

Host: Dr. Margot Brereton

Abstract:

Current interactions with computers are mainly limited to simple
keyboard and mouse manipulation. The research behind ubiquitous
computing has provided us with an array of new tools and methods for
interaction, but the current research tends to focus on what is
technically possible rather than exploring solutions to interaction
problems. Multimodal environments designed to support 'better'
interaction usually involve expensive and intrusive hardware and are
not designed for their context of use.

The aim of my research is to develop a lightweight and unobtrusive
multimodal interaction environment in a specific context through
field studies and participatory design. This will then be
demonstrated and tested using a prototyped environment. The domain
of a dental surgery has been identified as a suitable environment,
and my thesis will involve the design and evaluation of new
interaction modalities, such as gesture, speech and locality, to
support work practices in this context.

In this seminar, I will describe the literature surrounding this field
of research, preliminary field studies, initial technical
exploration and the research plan for completion
