Nature's Renewable Energy Blueprint: Bio-solar Energy via Photosynthesis and Biomimics
Speaker: Prof Charles Dismukes, Princeton University
When: 2004-06-16 12:00:00
Venue: Queensland Bioscience Precinct Auditorium (IMB, UQ)
Host: Dr Ben Hankamer
Abstract:What are the technological options for providing sustainable energy
on a global scale?
Natural photosynthesis is relatively inefficient, with significantly
less than 1% of incident solar energy being converted into useful
stored chemical fuels. How can we modify phototrophic organisms to
create efficient fuel factories?
Photovoltaic technology is generally not globally scalable, is
extremely expensive, and does not inherently provide any mechanism
for energy storage. How can we develop fuel-forming technologies
that are energy efficient, renewable and globally scalable?
