Abstract:

There are numerous studies linking human emotions and affect to
productivity and efficiency and showing that they are essential to
rational thought and information processing. However, as Information
Environments leave the laboratories and enter the real world it
would appear that we have spent precious little time looking at how
people will be left feeling when they encounter these
environments. Much research has been conducted into how to make the
hardware and software infrastructure for these environments and how
to make operating in such environments as seamless as possible. But
little attention has been given to the effect Information
Environments will have on a person's moods or emotions.

My research is aimed at the relationship between the multimedia
aspects of Information Environments and a person's moods or
emotions. I will produce tools for the construction of affective
media and design recommendations for the effective use of media for
induced transition of affect. Using observational studies and
standard psychological entry/exit surveys I hope to show the extent
to which multimedia can influence a person's affect. This work will
be based on the integration of existing research in the area of
media and emotion and social psychology and the results of the
studies I conduct will help to validate and refine the
recommendations.
