Low-cost Home Networking using Elvin

Abstract:

Elvin is a notification/subscription-based communications protocol
which has been used extensively in enterprise computing solutions.
The notify/subscribe protocol also works well with computer
controlled home automation. Actuators such as switches notify
events, such as switching ON or OFF, and devices subscribe to
receive notification of these events. Notifications can also be
generated by emails, SMS messages, web pages, etc. The talk firstly
describes how Elvin can be used for home automation.

Current Elvin systems run over Ethernet-based TCP/IP networks, which
are maybe too expensive for simple switches and lights. This
project also explores how simple protocols such as RS-232 or even
simpler open-circuit/closed-circuit line switching can be embedded
on standard Cat-5 cabling. The same cabling carries both power and
data. A small Elvin proxy server, based on a small Ethernet-capable
microprocessor, is used as a hub for these simple devices.

The talk illustrates simple home networking, using some lights and
switches, using the above innovations.

The support of DSTC trhough its DEACON project is gratefully
acknowledged.
