Abstract:

Recent advancements in sensor, radio and VLSI technology will enable
the production of small and inexpensive sensor nodes with
capabilities of computation and wireless communication. There is a
wide spectrum of applications wherein the introduction of sensor
nodes could infuse a profound increase in efficiency. There is a
class of large scale networks of sensors which require specific
network design paradigms that are scalable, robust and energy
efficient. In this research, such network design issues are
considered and discussed in detail. A communication mechanism is
proposed for delaying the demise of the sensor nodes for such
networks. The computational complexities of the procedures involved
are evaluated and suitable heuristics are suggested. The research
conducted so far is presented and the potential future directions of
the research are considered in this report.
