Abstract:This talk covers two areas of my recent research. In the first I
will discuss and demonstrate a proof-of-concept schema for
visualising collaboration using email. In the second I will discuss
a case study of students using online chat to communicate spatial
concepts.
An email proof-of-concept visualization prototype tools was
developed as a part of a collaboration visualization study. The
study analyses email communication patterns of content between
collocated groups during a collaborative activity. Data collected
from surveys and interviews was analysed to better understand the
nature of collaboration in general. The tool is used to identify the
importance of email content. It is then used to highlight the key
players. The prototype visualization schema makes it possible to
track the importance of individual contributions to a collaboration.
A case study was conducted to assess how text-based media can be
used to communicate spatial information. The exercise involved
manipulation of physical blocks and virtual blocks between two
physically remote partners communicating via text-based instant
messaging. The task given was to construct multiple
three-dimensional matrix permutations within the given rules. The
chat logs were analysed to identify participant's spatial reasoning
within the different media. What was found was that participants
utilized several methods of conveying spatial descriptions and
orientations to overcome the shortcomings of the communication
channel and the different modalities of the blocks.
