On Cognitive Robots and Cognitive Mapping

Speaker: Prof Wai (Albert) Yeap, Auckland University of Technology

Abstract:

Cognitive robots are robots embedded with algorithms for testing
cognitive behaviour. In this presentation, I will make a strong
distinction between such work and those, which are more engineering
oriented. In particular, I will highlight the differences using work
done in my laboratory on developing cognitive mapping
algorithms. These algorithms, as opposed to algorithms for robot
mapping, are designed to understand how humans and animals compute
representations of their environment.

Biography:

Professor Wai Yeap is the Director of the Institute for IT Research
and Head of the School of Computer and Information Sciences at the
Auckland University of Technology. He graduated from Essex
University in 1984 and began his academic career at Otago University
in 1985. His passion is in Artificial Intelligence research and
currently working on two computational theories: a theory of how
humans perceive large-scale space and a theory of how infants
understand language.
