Resource-Aware In-network Data Processing in Wireless Sensor Networks

Speaker: Uwe Röhm, University of Sydney

Abstract:

The next-generation of wireless sensor platforms allows for more
advanced in-network data processing. The central challenge remains
energy and communication efficiency. This talk presents a
resource-awareness framework for wireless sensor networks that
allows in-network data processing to adapt to changing resource
levels. We have implemented the proposed framework as part of our a
query processing system for the Sun SPOT sensor network platform,
called the Sun SPOT Distributed Query Processor (SSDQP). As a case
study, we apply the framework to the query processor’s on-line data
clustering algorithm, making it resource-aware. We demonstrate how
communication costs can be significantly reduced by de-coupling
clustering and data communication using SSDQP's multi-taskling
capabilities. The results also show the efectiveness of the
resource-aware clustering algorithm in that it can keep a constant
memory footprint for only a marginal acceptable error in result
accuracy.

Biography:

Uwe Röhm is lecturer in databases and information systems at the
School of Information Technologies at the University of Sydney. He
received the MSc degree in computer science from the University of
Passau, Germany, in 1996, and the PhD degree in technical sciences
in 2002 from ETH Zurich, Switzerland. His research interests are in
quality-of-service guarantees for web information systems, database
clusters, scientific data management, and wireless sensor networks.
His recent works include the extension of database support for
Bioinformatics, as well as the development of the first distributed
query processor for the Sun SPOT wireless sensor platform.
