Abstract:Microwave remote sensing, which has previously been used intensively
for aircraft detection, has recently been applied to biological
targets (e.g. breast tumor and hip prosthesis etc.). This
presentation proposes using microwaves to detect certain types of
cancerous lumps in the female breast. From an engineering point of
view, the problem is not unlike the detection of an object below the
ground. Normally, the target below the ground is something like
unexploded ordnance (UXO) or some other target. The problem
therefore is to reliably detect the presence of the dielectric
target in an environment that is inhomogeneous and dispersive.
