Advanced Condition Monitoring of Power System Equipment

Speaker: Andrew Thomas, ITEE

When: 2007-10-22 14:00:00

Venue: 78-420

Host: Prof. Tapan Saha

Abstract:

Condition monitoring of power system equipment is vital to ensure a
clear understanding of the ageing status of diverse sets of critical
equipment and therefore a reliable maintenance strategy. The seminar
will feature a broad outline of electrical condition monitoring
techniques and procedures, along with an application of such techniques
in the area of underground cable and power transformer diagnostics. In
particular, the presenter's extensive work in the area of diagnosing and
modelling water tree degradation in medium voltage cross-linked
polyethylene (XLPE) cables will be presented.
The presenter will also outline areas he considers important for
research focus in the short and long terms.

Biography:

Andrew Thomas is a near completion PhD candidate in the University of
Queensland's Power and Energy Systems group. Prior to his PhD commencement,
Andrew worked at Connell Wagner's Advanced Technology Centre in Newcastle,
specialising in transformer diagnostic methods. His current research
interests include insulation diagnostics and modelling, particularly
specialising in water tree degradation within medium voltage underground
cable networks.
