Techniques for Assessment of Power equipment Insulation Condition

Speaker: Dr Manoj Pradhan, ITEE

Abstract:

Due to deregulation in the electricity market, there is a trend in
the utilities to optimize asset utilization by operating existing
equipment at ever-higher capacity levels and possibly exceeding
nameplate ratings. This is done to defer capital investment in new
facilities or in refurbishment of existing facilities. Thus, many
research organisations have focused their efforts on developing
methods to assess the condition of equipment such as transformers,
switchgear and cables in order to extend the life of existing
infrastructure and determine whether aging equipment can be operated
reliably beyond its design life. In this presentation, the author
will give a very brief overview of condition monitoring techniques
developed to tackle different equipment. Authors will share some of
his own research experience on the condition monitoring of these
assets.

Biography:

Manoj Kumar Pradhan received M.Sc. (Engg.) and the Ph.D. degrees
from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 2002 and 2005,
respectively. He worked as a visiting scientist in the department of
Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. Dr.
Pradhan has worked as a postdoctoral research fellow in the high
voltage laboratory at Swiss federal Institute of Zurich (ETHZ) for
six month. Since Feb 2006, he is with the School of IIEE at the
University of Queensland as a postdoctoral research fellow. His
research interests include ageing phenomena in electrical
insulation, condition monitoring of power equipment.
