Tools for the development and operation of a flexible electrical energy system
Speaker: Dr John McDonald, Imperial College, London
When: 2008-05-16 09:00:00
Venue: 78-622
Host: Prof Tapan Saha
Abstract:Electrical energy systems of the future are likely to become more
flexible, with a heightened ability to vary their configuration
and/or control in response to changing network conditions. This
presentation examines methodologies that have been developed to
address two aspects of this transitional process. Initially the
presentation focuses on techniques for improving network behaviour
under fault conditions through potential modification of generator
design and control. Contrasting applications of the techniques in
both transmission systems and low voltage "microgrids" will be
examined. The second part of the presentation will focus on
assessing the judiciousness of greater flexibility in network
operation by considering an operational measure of distribution
network reliability. After illustrating the value of such a measure
of reliability, a method for its calculation, along with its
potential applications will be presented.
Biography:Dr McDonald obtained a BE (Hons - Elec)/BA (Chinese) from the
University of Queensland in 1999. Subsequently, he completed his
PhD at the University of Queensland on "Investigations into the
design of PowerformerTM for optimal generator and system performance
under fault conditions". Since 2005 he has been working at Imperial
College London where he has been looking at short term measures of
distribution network reliability. His research interests encompass
distribution system reliability assessment; power systems fault
performance and equipment condition monitoring.
Dr McDonald is a member of the IEAust, IEEE and IET. He is also a
member of CIGRE and was involved in the establishment of the CIGRE
Next Generation Network, a programme designed to promote CIGRE to
early career engineers in the UK.
