ENGG4800 - Engineering Project Management tutoring

For the second semester of 2003 and the first of 2004, I was one of the tutors for ENGG4800 - Engineering Project Management. The subject teaches Project Management by a combination of instruction and practical experience; most students are responsible for managing a team on an actual project, generally within the ELEC2800 or ELEC3800 subjects.

Blah, blah, blah.

I could sit here repeating the things I've said in tutes or copying chunks out of the subject's website but that's no fun and is barely informative. This is my second semester tutoring the subject and repetition's hardly proven the best or only way to get the point across. Carefully chosen tailored combinations womp all over repetition. Insight and anticipation are what management work.

Project Management is essentially about knowing three things about a project, at any time in its life-cycle:

  1. How long it will take
  2. How much it will cost
  3. How you'll know when it's done

Everything else that people associate with project management is an artifact (or perhaps a symptom) of this, or of telling men with suits that you know this.
