It can be difficult to know how to manage students who don't appear to be keen on coming to class. These students may not know why they have come to university; the shock of university after school may leave them floundering or your classes may not meet their expectations. These students may be unreliable, failing to submit work or prepare for tutorials. They may appear very extroverted and even aggressive. Disenchantment could be a major reason for skipping classes. You can:
· Try talking to the student after class. They may need some help they were unwilling to ask for.
· Reflect on your method of managing classes to try and ensure you cater for a variety of needs or at least make it clear to students at the outset what they can expect and why.
· Seek the support of the course coordinator if the student is causing you and other students real difficulty. You should not tolerate any behaviour which interferes with the learning of other students.
· Refer the student to colleagues on campus if this seems warranted (e.g., to Counselling Services).
