Research - Methods

Ethnography and contextual interview were the methods used to evaluate ‘Alice’s Tea Party’. Participants were given 10 minutes to interact with the installation. Participants were then interviewed while they were still sitting in front of the TV

There are two sets of interview questions, one set for participants who experimented with the installation and the other for those who did not experiment and not find out that the machine is unintelligent.

The questions asked to the participants who experimented were as follows:

  • Does this machine evoke any kind of emotion in you?
  • What do you feel after interacting with this machine? Why?
  • How did you find out that the machine is unintelligent?
  • Does the machine encourage you to experiment?
  • What do you feel when you see your own video image on the screen interacting with the TV?
  • What do you think the video image means?
  • What do the interactions remind you of?
  • In your views, what do you think this ‘interactive art’ is all about?

For the participants who did not found out that the machine is unintelligent, the same questions was asked except the question "How did you find out that the machine is unintelligent?" was replaced with:

  • Why would you not want to experiment with the machine?
